You’re In Business War Whether You Know It Or Not (Part 5 of 5)
Earlier I stated that “knowledge is power”. By combining strategic planning with strategic computerization you will have the ability to outthink, out-plan and outmaneuver your competition because you will have the “power of knowledge.”
Sun Tsu, a famous Chinese general and strategist from the fourth century sums it up nicely with the following quote, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
It’s best to use an outside consultant to facilitate and assist your organization with a strategic planning and strategic computerization initiative. As each strategic planner has his or her own theories on what strategic planning is, be sure to hire someone whose viewpoints make the most sense to you. A skilled facilitator will guide your management team down the right path, making sure all the correct questions are discussed and answered, but will not make any decisions for them.
Since the management team makes all the decisions in a consensus, they will take ownership of the strategies and the effectiveness of these strategies will increase a thousand fold. Freedom from worrying about disagreeing with the boss will lead to more openness and nurture better ideas.
You are no longer in the same businesses you think you’ve been in for the last 5-10 years. Technology has changed it right before your very eyes. Everyone in this room should know that they are in the information business from this day forward.
It is the company that has the most information available to them about their customers, products, and markets AND knows how to use it for their own strategic advantage who is going to be leaders in their fields. You are all engaged in business war whether you like it or not and you’re going to have to start thinking like generals if you plan on being victorious.
You are going to have to learn the strategies of warriors like those of the past and constantly stay on top of the star wars technology tools of the future. The weapon of all future wars whether they’re being fought on the battlefield or the boardroom is going to be knowledge.
For those that have the knowledge and have the generals to transform that knowledge into strategies will have an organization that will be efficient and impenetrable to attack by competitors. You will be able to successfully position your company to outthink, out-plan, and outmaneuver anyone who tries to go after your customers, products or markets.
You, as business people have to make a choice. Are you going to embrace these new business tools which are available to you and develop the strategies needed for future success or are you going to allow yourself to be hurt by a competitor who uses them against you?
By using the techniques of strategic planning and the technology of strategic computerization you can insure your company’s future success.
Even though Sun Tsu said this quote is over 2500 years ago, it’s still true today.
“It is a doctrine of war not to assume the enemy will not come, but rather to rely on one’s readiness to meet him; not to presume that he will not attack, but rather to make one ’s self invincible.”
